Growing up in Grass Valley, CA, Joe grew up loving horses, but his family didn't have a ranch, he discovered a Thoroughbred farm next door to the local grammar school.  He spent time there cleaning stalls and helping with the breeding.  After high school, he got a job on a ranch in Nevada, soon leaving there to work for Ray Hunt on another ranch.  He wanted to learn, watching Ray and seeing what he could get done, and how horses acted around him.  He knew that in other places, peoples answer for a horse problem was to get more people.  He spent as much time as possible with Ray and Bill Dorrance.  Joe's horsemanship clinics are designed to create a comfortable environment where people feel confident to try new things and expand their skill level with their horses.  Clinic sessions include colt starting, cow working and horsemanship.

Jack is a master of teaching both horse & rider the elements of the flying lead change.  The prerequisites for the fllying lead changes will be covered.  You will learn to gain control of all of the horse's individual parts.  Timing your requests to the horse's footfall, and cadence will be emphasized.  You will learn a new depth of the meaning of "straightness".  The overall goal will be for the rider to learn how to "ride a better horse".

While each clinic is slightly different and tailored to those riders in attendances, you can expect the lconic format to follow that of Jack's book "If I Were To Train A Horse".  It would be helpful for each rider to have previously read Jack's book before attending the clinic.  You might want to bring a copy of Jack's book on the final day of the clinic for him to sign.

Lee Smith is a gifted and eloquent teacher who tells her students, "Don't simply focus on doing what I do, learn what I see."  She conducts clinics around the country, where she shares what she sees as if speaking for the horse and thus providing her students with the opportunity to observe the exchange of communication between horse and human.  Her first teacher was Ray Hunt, who gave her the foundation for everything she does with horses today.  She emphasizes communication with your horse without fear or force, to establish a willing partnership rather than resistance.  The goal is a horse that is soft, gentle and responsive and moves smoothly and relaxed in every situation.  Learn the essential elements of good horsemanship.

Bryan was raised on his family's ranch near Salinas, California. In his teen years he became
friends with neighbor Bill Dorrance. He spent all the time he could with Bill, working with
horses and braiding rawhide.

After college he worked with Bill steadily, starting and riding colts on Bill's ranch. During this time Bryan met Bill's friend Ray Hunt and Bill's brother Tom Dorrance. He had many opportunities since those years to work for and with these gifted men. They have greatly influenced and helped him learn what he is able to accomplish with a horse and ultimately with parts of his life.

Bryan is eager to share what he has learned. He believes that he is constantly learning and considers himself to be a continual student of horsemanship.
